No city tends to fascinate its visitors in such
varied style as Mumbai does. It is the largest and most happening
metropolis in India and offers a fine blend of tradition and technology.
The city thrives to create a niche of its own in every field. Whether
it is art or entertainment, technology or industry, business or
finance, Mumbai never fails to enchant you. People from various
professions, from all over India and abroad find Mumbai as the ultimate
base to achieve their goals. The city is also home to the celluloid
world ‘Bollywood’, one of the largest entertainment
industries in the world.
Geographically, Mumbai is a fine collection of
seven beautiful islands, by the side of the azure blue Arabian Sea.
When the British came to India they find Mumbai as one of the finest
and best protected natural harbors still to be explored. They later
turned it into an important trading center. From then on Mumbai
never looks back. The city owes its name ‘Bombay’ from
the Portuguese ancestors, which means ‘good bay’. Finally,
it was renamed as ‘Mumbai’, in the name of the goddess
Mumbadevi.
For visitors Mumbai presents a gala of great attractions
(old and new). The Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai is one of the
best museums in the country. It showcases a rare collection of art,
sculpture, old firearms, rare coins and a priceless collection of
miniature paintings. The city’s most prized possession is
the fabulous, four turrets and intricately carved ‘Gateway
of India’. A drive through the Marine Drive or the ‘Queens
Necklace’ provides great view of the city on one side and
the spectacular coast on the other. Mumbai’s beaches are ideal
for activities like camel and pony rides, acrobats etc.
